Chlorinated Water - Facts about Your Tap Water When chlorine is used to disinfect water, it
reacts with natural organic matter causing the formation of chemical
compounds called chlorinated by-products. Trihalomethanes (THMs) are the most commonly occurring type of chlorine by-product. They are associated with bladder, colon and rectal cancer, miscarriage and birth defects. THMs are much more dangerous than chlorine and,
unlike chlorine, they are
not easy to filter out of your drinking
water. Trihalomethanes require specially activated carbon filters for effective removal. These filters must also be capable of removing THMs for the life of the cartridge; otherwise, these contaminants will be re-introduced back into the drinking water. Most drinking water treatment systems, including reverse osmosis membranes and pitcher water filters like Brita, do not filter Trihalomethanes (THMs). Bottled water is clearly not the answer. A recent U.S. study found high concentrations of THMs in bottled water. |
